Rowland Evans/Mr. Kissinger
3:40 p.m., May 9, 1972
E:
Yeah, I know. Did you see that Chinese or that Peking charge that
we attacked 2 Chinese ships.
K:
Yeah, our people claim it isn't true but the Chinese have never been
wrong in the past so I'm sure it's true.
E:
Mistake?
K:
Oh, sure.
E:
What will we do about that?
K:
We will apologize if it's true. I mean, God, we have no intention of
getting the Chinese involved here.
E:
Well, they say the beauty of this thing is that the Soviets went in there
with a mine sweeping trawler and swept away some of those mines.
Do we just re-seed?
K:
Well, first of all, I understand that these mines are set in such a way
that, you know, you can eventually sweep them but you have to lose
a ship in the process and then that ship will block the harbor.
E:
I see. Well, I don't think the Soviets
K:
I mean, I understand it's a really big operation to --
E:
To sweep them.
K:
To sweep. These are not World War II; some have different settings, so
some go off only after 5 ships have passed over them so you never know
so you just never know.
E:
Um-humm.
K:
And then we have some other mines which can't be swept -- you know,
they just can't do it.
E:
Do you think they might wait until after the German ratification?
K:
If I had predict, they will not do it before tomorrow night, European
time.
