TELECON
Secretary Laird/Mr. Kissinger
10:10 a. m., May 10, 1972
L:
Henry.
K:
Mel, how are you?
L:
I just wondered I'm getting ready to go on down there now
to face the tigers for a while. I think I'll try to hit out on a short
positive statement but then just take questions for 40 minutes.
K:
I think that's right.
L:
You got anything that you think I should hit?
K:
No, I don't think we should get into the question of what we
will do if they start litering(?) If we can avoid a verbal challenge
to Soviet ships
L:
Okay. They may
Just between us, Henry, these stories
that they are putting out about how I raised all the negative aspects
of this thing and that it was Connally in his strong leadership who
was the one,
K:
OH, God-damn it.
I saw that story today
You mean, the
New York Times story.
L:
Well, and there's another one that is in the New York News, too,
that says I was very negative and that.
K:
Oh, it's disgusting. It is revolting.
L:
Because you see you've got to be in a position where you can
raise questions.
K:
Mel, it's a disgrace. I didn't read the Daily News story; I read
the New York Times.
L:
that it was Connally's strong leadership that came to the
forefront and that he was the one that was responsible. You know, that
doesn't do us any good.
K:
Not at all. Who the hell is Connally? I mean what does he know?
