TELECON Secretary Laird/Mr. Kissinger 10:10 a. m., May 10, 1972 L: Henry. K: Mel, how are you? L: I just wondered I'm getting ready to go on down there now to face the tigers for a while. I think I'll try to hit out on a short positive statement but then just take questions for 40 minutes. K: I think that's right. L: You got anything that you think I should hit? K: No, I don't think we should get into the question of what we will do if they start litering(?) If we can avoid a verbal challenge to Soviet ships L: Okay. They may Just between us, Henry, these stories that they are putting out about how I raised all the negative aspects of this thing and that it was Connally in his strong leadership who was the one, K: OH, God-damn it. I saw that story today You mean, the New York Times story. L: Well, and there's another one that is in the New York News, too, that says I was very negative and that. K: Oh, it's disgusting. It is revolting. L: Because you see you've got to be in a position where you can raise questions. K: Mel, it's a disgrace. I didn't read the Daily News story; I read the New York Times. L: that it was Connally's strong leadership that came to the forefront and that he was the one that was responsible. You know, that doesn't do us any good. K: Not at all. Who the hell is Connally? I mean what does he know?
