K:
Hello.
R:
Hi, Henry. I was calling about - did you see the Bob Semple story?
K:
Oh, I was outraged. I was just going over to see the President and
was raising holy cain about it. That's the sort of thing that does
nobody any good.
R:
NEWSDAY called up yesterday and said that they had been advised
by somebody in the White House that I was against what the President
was doing.
K:
Well, it's that sort of S---, if you'11 forgive me that destroys us all.

R:
I know it. I don't understand it. I mean, if every time we nod at
the President it's going to be in the paper, you see it, I mean it's
such a lot of
K:
I must say I went over and I made the President call in Colson and
Haldeman and of course they all deny they did it.
R:

ass working for him and then you read that kind of backstair gossip
and you say "Oh nuts. 11
K:
And these nuts who put this out. Two weeks ago they put out that
I was opposed to the first attack on Hanoi and Haiphong. I forget
who put that one over.
R:
Well, I got my whole building over here. We had a series of meetings
and I got the whole god damn building behind this and you know now
the story comes out and they say "Oh, for Christ's sake. 11
K:
I told the President yesterday about what you had done. Alex Johnson
told me about how you got everybody together in the morning, how
everybody was working together on this and I was beside myself when
I saw the Semple story.
R:
Of course, I went into all that with the subcabinet group:
K:
And I understand you did a superb job there.
