Gerry Schecter/Mr. Kissinger 12:25 p.m., May 14, 1972 - 2 - K: Scott doesn't know a damn thing. What is he saying? S: Well, not much. K: Hugh Scott? S: Yeah, he defended the Administration very well, I thought. You know, the word is going around that we really let the Chinese and the Russians know what we were going to do. T K: otally wrong, believe me. I mean, Gerry, I have never lied to you. We gave them advance notification -- that is to say, about 45 minutes ahead of time. So in this sense, it's technically true that we lef them know. S: Well, that's different. K: But we did not let them know what we were going to do. We did make aur general position very clear to them, but that does not mean we let our particular strategy be known to them. S: Good. Okay. Thanks, Henry. K: Okay, Gerry. S: I was till 10:00 last night trying to get this thing straightened out and explain the ways of the world to them up there, but I think it will be all right. I mean you have to have a fall-back position. Mine was, God-damn it, let's make sure that we say that the final decision was made on Monday and that Kissinger they had an NSC meeting and Kissinger's position is an advisor to the President. We don't speculate on what view he took. K: The real story is the President was opposed to it. S: [Laughter] And you talked him into it. Okay, Henry. K: That's what made it SO hard. S: We save that for the memoirs, huh? K: I tell you, if it hadn't been for one of the Cabinet Members who beat the President down, there's no telling what would have happened. S: Okay, are we going the end of next week. K: Good, good.
