Henry Kissinger/Melvin Laird
5/13/72 9:15 a.m.
HAK: You sure are raising hell all over the country, aren't you Mel.
MEL: Oh no, I have been very quite.
HAK: I saw you raising hell in Texas.
ML: Well, you have to raise a little hell once in a while.
HAK: I never got a chance to call you. I think you did a great job
at your press conference. Dobrynin didn't in case you want to know.
ML: He didn't like it, huh.
HAK: He thought you were a little tough.
ML: Well, it is nice to hear the doves.
HAK: understood what you did. I admire what you did.
ML: Say Henry, we dropped the Tan Waug bridge for the first time.
HAK: Oh, it is the Tan Waug bridge.
ML: Right, the one span is in the water and this is something--another
thing I am calling you about. I wanted to check out one thing, it has
to do with the timing of this thing on our personnel moves, has the
President had a chance to go over that memorandum
HAK: No, I am taking it up to him this morning.
ML: One of my problems over here is that everybody is throughout
the services is waiting for the new Chairman and also they are waiting
for the Chief of Staff for the Army. You get more damn speculation
on it because
HAK: May I make a suggestion to you Mel? Let's move on the Chairman
on Monday--I will handle the Chief of Staff of the Army for you, but I think
if we canwait a week, you will get a better reception.
ML: The problem that we have there is that if we go with one and not
the other, I think it is better to wait a week on both. That will make
so much speculation during that whole week, and I don't think that is
