Pres: Now, with XRXX regard to the
, in talking to Bob,
I told him I told you about the - and he's going to discuss with Ziegler and
you the press possibilities of what we ought to do if anything and naturally
the leaders thing we'll have to notify them pretty soon. Probably Tuesday.
He raised the point as to whether the meeting with Rogers and group was
necessary. He says why don't you have it in Salzberg.
HAK: I think it would be better.
Pres: Maybe you are right.
HAK: I think he is right.
Pres: Well, I think maybe I'll have more time then.I think the way it can be
done is if you'll get in touch with Bob, would you, and Bob can tell XXXX and
say look, the President has been so weighted down with these other things and
that we'll have a meeting in Salzberg in the afternoon before going into Russia.
How's that sound to you.
HAK: I agree.
Bres: Bob's point is that this whole trip is so important that I have to do
whatever's best for me.
HAK:
These meetings will take it out of you because
everything will depend on you.
Pres: That's right. I can't make any mistakes.
HAK: You can't make any mistakes. You can't be disavowed.
Pres: Has Smith already given away everything on SALT.
HAK: Well, I pulled him back from it again. But tjxxpx the point is these
guys there are well briefed. I think you ought to get the maximum of rest
and concentration this week.
Pres: Well Henry, I'm going to read some of this background stuff X and
I'm going to read your talk with Breshnev and the briefing book because that's
the one I've got to be really up on.
HAK: You'll have it Tuesday night.
Pres: Bob tells me that working on this speech for the Moscow.
HAK: I haven't seen that yet.
