TelCon - May 14, 1972 Secretary Laird - 9:40 to 9:55 La ird: How are you Henry? HAK: How are you. Laird: Good, briefings go alright for you this morning? HAK: I haven't had it yet. I've had the President on the phone for an hour. Laird: Oh, that's too bad, because the briefings are very good. HAK: XXXIXXXXXXX Yelling and screaming. I have seen the written report, it sounds very good. Laird: And I thought that that would be helpful for you to have . . HAK: You got me just as I was going into the briefing. Laird, Well, I'll talk to you a little later. There are a couple of things that happened that we can talk about later. This story that's out in the New York Times HAK: Well, kexx That's what he was yelling about and he wants it denied immediately. Laird: Well, I denied that you know right at the time that Rogers put it out to the leadership. You know he told the leadership of the Congress there that night that we could set these things off and I immediately went in and pounced on that. A1 was there. xAckx HAK: Could the Defense Department put something out today that the the New York Times x story is untrue. Laird: I think we should say that we're not going to discuss the mine technology but the facts in the NYT story are in errer. HAK: I think that would be good. Laird: But we are not going to discuss mine technology. HAK: Absolutely not. I think Moorer shouldn't talk SO much at these WSAG meetings in front of State. Laird: I just think it's nuts. As you know, we can't handle it the way they say . SX On the destructors we can but that's different.
