Mr. Kissinger/Secretary Laird

K:
Well, I called Hugh Sidey and told him to see what they could
do to
that there was no one who knew this stuff and they should
consider that anyone who talks about this stuff has got to be self-serving.
And they should keep that in mind. There was one other thing, while
we are in Moscow, do you think Hue could be coming apart?
L:
Well, I'm not
They are going to make an all-out effort there,
but I'm not sure of the timing of it. I thought it would come last week --
the latter part of the week but they couldn't get the thing together.
We're giving them hell ap there, Henry. If we can have another one
of these things now -- we plan another one -- at least the South
Vietnamese are encouraged, and Abe says he will keep doing it and
if we can keep them out on the attack, they can keep them offguard there.
That is such a short distance. They've come down 23 miles now -- that's
all the further they've moved in 5 weeks is XX 23 miles.
K:
I think, if by the end of June, they haven't got more than they've
got or maybe only Kontum in addition to what they've got, they'v been
defeated.
L:
Yeah, well, they expected to move a lot further than this in the
5 or 5-1/2 weeks.
K:
They must have.
L:
There's no question about it. But you know, it's hard to give an
exact -- whether they can put -- hell, I think every effort is being made
to keep that from X happening.
K:
Well, let's talk about it tomorrow.
L:
Okay.
K:
Good, Mel.
L:
I hope the President reads over some of the stuff today. He
shouldn't
you know, the morale is picking up over there as far as
the South Vietnamese and if they have a few more
Jeez, out there
even in MR-2 yesterday
K:
Near Kontum.
L:
Right.
K:
Hell, they lose 200 here, 200 there. They can't keep this up
indefinitely.
