TELCON Ken Jamieson (Standard Oil) /Kissinger 8/3/72 10:20 a.m. K: Hello. J: Good morning, Dr. Kissinger, how are you? K: How are you? J: Fine, thank you. K: I talked to your associate yesterday. J: Yes, I just finished talking to him, but he suggested that I should give you a call. K: Well, he was clear enough. He didn't want us to give them a figure and that's fine with me. The less I have to do with this the better. J: The problem is as you know is we have got to get the industry together on what the hell they would settle on. K: What the man did promise me is that they would not inisist on net book value and that they would settle for a better figure than the one that's now being discussed. He said any figure I gave him he XX would consider very seriously. Now it's entirely up to you. This would be given through private channels and would be non-committing. It's entirely up to you. I have no interest in this. J: All right. We'll have to get together within the industry on that problem. K: They are willing to give up the definition and I think I made clear to him that a confiscatory settlement would be very disastrous. J: I think everything you've done with him has been very helpful. I had a couple of questions. Where does the letter stand? Is that going out ? K: Yes but I wanted to have the talk first so we could put it into the context of the talk. I don't see any sense now in sending an emissary. J: You think everything has been covered adequately with Emir Saud.
