TELCON
Ambassador Koscuisko-Morizet (France)/Mr. Kissinger
5:00 p.m., September 22, 1972
K:
Hello
KM:
Thank you. I just now
K:
Thank you for the breakfast this morning.
KM:
Oh, thank you very much, not at all. The talks have been very good.
K:
Good.
KM:
But of course it was general views and I understand that in this meeting
only general views will be expressed and of course the terms are still
very vague and I think when the talks will be known it will be more and
more precise. But (in New York ?) I think the talks are productive
and I am sure the President appreciates it.
K:
Well, he's under strict instructions to do nothing that will produce a
confrontation with France and to settle it and I hope he made clear to
you that he will try to settle it in a constructive way.
KM:
Yes, yes; it was very clear.
K:
Good.
And
so
what he says -- you know, it doesn't really matter if we
state a certain position as long as we're not going to drive it to the point
of showdown with you.
KM:
But what is necessary of course is a further consultation.
K:
Yes. Oh, absolutely. And that we will strongly promote.
KM:
Yes, yes.
K:
And that you can tell your President, as indeed the President I think wrote
at the bottom of his letter.
KM:
Okay. Well, thank you very much. I think it was very useful.
K:
Good. Thank you.
KM:
Bye.
