I don't understand why they let Hughes--Senator Hughes has
done this --he's insisted upon a hearing --
HK:
Yeh, but I won't let him go on Wed. and Thurs.
ML:
What'll they do then is hold up everybody' - - and that's all right
if they hold up for a while, that won't hurt us.
HK:
He can't--he's coming back Wednesday noon--he's got to get ready
for a hearing and I have to get his report--I need orWednesday
afternoon
ML:
Is that all right if I say that to Stennis?
HK:
Absolutely. I'll call him myself.
ML:
What they are doing is using the fact that we have Al's nomination up
there and Stennis didn't really want to do this but he says he can't deny
this of another Senator.
HK:
Yeh, but he should get Haig for the following week.
ML:
And what I will do is just tell him that it is not possible for him to
come--okay - I'll get after him right now.
HK.
Good thank you Mel.
ML:
Henry, is it ixpossible important that the Chairman and I be there for
that signing tomorrow?
HK:
No.
ML:
They're putting the problem that I got--we are all out here trying to
do a little business.
HK:
No, it's not important.
