Ambassador Rabin/Mr. Kissinger
9:25 p.m., September 27. 1972
R:
I believe that I will talk to Garment tomorrow. It is my problem.
K:
Well, it's up to you but don't do it for my sake because this is the sort of
thing that's bound to happen and you could not when you get asked by
a middle level fellow say you do not want the President to be there.
R:
I didnt expect Garment to ask and I didnt want Idan to know everything
that I talk to you about.
K:
No, no; you were absolutely right. I understand the situation.
R:
I didn't want to say --
K:
No, no; you were 100% right and don't worry about it.
R:
When he came today and told me I said to him it's a pity because I advised
I did not recommend
I'11 put it this way, I did not recommend it that he
would come.
K:
Well, don't worry about it, I fully understand.
R:
Really I feel bad as a matter of fact.
K:
Look, if we have no worse problems, we're going to have -- I just wanted
to check on what had happened.
R:
No, no; this is exactly - I said it to you, I didn't want to tell anybody.
K:
No, forget it.
R:
I'11 tell you what I was afraid as a matter of fact Since the Foreign
Minister is coming, I thought if I tell it to anybody that I suggested it
everybody would take it as my interference with a meeting between the
President and the Foreign Minister.
K:
I fully understand and I do not think you should tell Garment because it --
R:
This is why I won't.
K:
You tell Garment, he'll tell Fisher and then it's going to be a big affair.
Just forget it. This is such a miniscule event in my affairs and in your
affairs that next week at this time no one will remember.
