TELCON Frank Mankiewicz/Mr. Kissinger 4:20 p.m., September 28, 1972 K: Hello. M: Henry. K: Frank, only 6 more weeks of this nightmare and we can talk to each other again. M: That's right, that's right. I have two things. First of all, we're going to release the story tomorrow that you are the only person that we are going to hold over in the Administration. We do want to have you. K: (laughter) M: We like your work. I have a very serious problem. I'm aware of course of all the fund-raising that you've been doing. K: I have done none. M: And a fellow called us from Fort Worth -- I haven't quite checked him out yet but he says that he will contribute $28 million to the campaign provided that we will pay for three half-hours on each of the networks in Texas. I'm deadly serious -- this is his proposal. During which time he will explain on this half-hour exactly how it was that you kidnapped him and held him prisoner for 60 days. K: Jesus Christ! M: What I want you to do is to make a clean breast of it and we can make $28 million and that will mean that your campaign will have $50 million and ours will then have $29 million. K: I thought that we had kept that part of it secret. M: Well, it's out. Now, was it 60 days or was it a shorter period? Where did you hold him prisoner? K: In my backyard. M: In your back yard. You just let him graze. I see, that's why your grass is SO poor there. K: That's right. M: But I thought you would like to know that -- it's a kind of a twist on the other story --
