Joseph Alsop
10/2/72 11:44 a. m.
K: Joe, I am concluding that the Alsops are my death.
A: Why, what do you mean?
K: Your brother Stewart has done an article which will force me
I just
can't seen him socially anymore.
A: What do you mean Henry?
K: I'11 just have to decide that if these things are going to be written I must
say I don't see these
You know, every piece of crap that's been around:
why I should be Secretary of State, why Rogers should stay because, as the
alternative, because then at least there'll be an ineffectual guy there so that
I can run it, why I will resign if Connally leaves [sic], why it's in the nation-
al interest that I stay as Secretary of State because (1) I can brutalize the
Jews and (2) a Nixon without Kissinger is a scary prospect. Now if he wants
to get me out of here this month, he could have not written a better article.
A: You mustn t blame me for Stew, Henry.
K: No, but I11 tell you I'm really beside myself about it.
A: I thought of writing a similar article and thought it would make trouble and
didn't as you X can find out from General Haig.
K: I know, but it's doing
you know,
A: And I certainly did n st suggest Stew's article; I didn't know he was doing
of the sort.
K: It's the most damaging article to me that's been written in four years in
the guise of being friendly.
A: Well it was not intended to be anything but friendly, I can assure you, and
I think he doesn't know enoug
I thought of doing something similar,
not quite SO
K: Well you know how
you know my affection for Stew.
A: I know and I did take the trouble to call up the General as you were away
on your travels and he said it would make a great deal of trouble and SO I didn't
do it.
K: Well the reason I tell you is because, SO you can tell Stew.
A: And I will tell Stew.
