TELCON Joe Kraft/Mr. Kissinger 3:25 pm, October 5, 1972 JK: Hello, Henry. HK: Joe, Sorry we -- JK: No, it's my fault. HK: I thought you told me you were free till 5:00. JK: Well, I thought I was too and then my secretary made an appointment for 4:30 and so I 11 miss it and hope I can see you next week. It's my fault and I'm very sorry. HK: Yes, definitely. But I had to spend the morning with Haig. JK: Yeah. How is the outlook for him? HK: How is the outlook for what? Oh, as he sees it? JK: Yeah, for the road show. HK: For the -- (laughter) I appreciate the faith you all show. The one thing people haven't explained yet is if this is a roadshow, why is Le Duc Tho cooperating? JK: Well, you and I both canvass various possibilities. I mean, one the Chinese-Russian possibility; another possibility is he doesn't know what he's doing. I mean, if you look at what they did on the prisoners, you are more and more tempted that they are just as bad as all other governments. HK: Well, they're idiotic about our domestic opinion. JK: That's right. You know, they are not even consistent in their idiocy. I mean, the way they handled our prisoners really is just shockingly miserable as an operation. HK: Yeah, yeah, yeah. JK: Yeah, but look, my assumption is -- I know you don't waste his time and I assume you are getting somewhere. HK: Well, that I'm not even claiming. I'm saying it's -- you know, we're talking about serious subjects very seriously.
