TELCON Tom Joirriel/Mr. Kissinger 2"45 - 10/27/72 K: Hello. J: Hi, Tom Jarrell of ABC. Since you made that hasty exist for lunch, you have half of ABC at Andrews AFB and the other half en route to Paris. K: Goodness gracious. J: What I was hoping about, I was hopeing you might give me some background guidance on this statement by the Foreign Minister in Paris. Insisting that Le Duc Tho and Thieu would be there on the 30th and 31st, and they would be glad to see you on the 31st and talk with you on the first and second of November. They are still pressing to have the agreement signed on the 31st. K: Everyone now has to get off their positions--I think it's going to work out. J: You are not unduly alarmed by the tone of what they are saying today. K: Well, I have yet to see an official text. They know what's needed and if their serious they will not throw everything over for--by insisting that we sign something on a certain date, the essence of which we affirm publicly and, you know, we all ought to keep a sense of perspective here. J: Right. K: I mean, this war has gone on for ten years and if it should not be ended over what's now at stake, then you have to assume they weren't serious to begin with. J: Do you consider this a legitimate offer to meet, that they would be in Paris next week, or is this outside of the channel that you would normally use to-- K: It's outside the channel we would normally use, but I think it will wind up in a meeting, but on what date I don't want to predict. J: Right. You wouldn't say it might be between now and Tuesday and after that, or, you do expect to have another meeting. K: That's right. That's what we've asked for and that's what's going to happen.
