Barbara Walters/Mr. Kissinger
7:20 p.m., October 27, 1972
K:
Well, you know we still have a few weeks.
W:
What is this whole October 31st thing? I don't understand why they're sticking
why that date is so important.
K:
Because they want to get us nailed down before the election.
W:
Why?
K:
Because they're afraid we're going to go ape after the election.
W:
They have that little faith?
K:
Well, Vietnamese are unbelievable suspicious.
W:
"hey also said that everything is over you know, they showed a copy of it
obviously and said that it's all there; that there are no changes necessary.
K:
Well, you know that's their version. We said changes are necessary. You
know, they can show the document but what does that prove? I've agreed that
there is a document that we worked on.
W:
What do you think is going to happen to Thieu? When do you think he's going
to start to change?
K:
Oh, I think -- if the North Vietnamese would just shutup now and meet us
again, which eventually they'11 do after they've made enough noise, then we
can work on both of our customers in tandem.
W:
Why don't you tell them -- don't you have any way of saying this to them?
K:
I think they understand it but they've got a lot of face to save now themselves.
It's inconceivable to me that we would have come this far and that it would
get kicked over on an essentially procedural detail.
W:
It's inconceivable to me too. The only thing I can think of is that Thieu could
just be I don't know what kind of a man he is, you do.
K:
Well, Thieu might kick it over but I can't imagine that Hanoi will kick it over.
W:
Can he kick it over?
K:
No.
No, I think --
