3 H: You know I'm all my wrestling days are all behind me. I want very much to work with you. I've had the highest regard for you. It's just a fact of life. K: And you know my feelings about you and we will - I will keep you fully informed and the thought that you might be causing trouble really wouldn't occur to me. H: I would hope that - might I just make this suggestion that if the President's going to talk to the country as he is I know before the campaign is over, that on this Vietnam thing that he just let the people know that again we are working on a peaceful settlement; that it is important that it be done right and actually, in a sense if it's not before the election, it even has a political plus in the sense that we're not trying to run it through for election votes, we're trying to do it for the future and for a real lasting peace. K: Right. H: I think if he talks this way to the public it will be helpful in reassuring. K: He is speaking tonight and let me see whether I can get some of these thoughts. Well, I know I'll put them before him and I'm sure - it happens to be his view so that I'm sure H: Yeh, I know that it is and in this area, you know, there is no one else that can do it except the man that's there and it just seems to me that there were some people trying to pretend that he was doing this before the election to get the votes and K: Hanoi trigered it, we didn't. H: Exactly. Now the thing that I think the President needs to say to me as a citizen - not as Senator Humphrey - but to my wife and my kids is that look, we're on the track, we've made progress, everybody knows it including the North Vietnamese and I'm not going to try to make a snap judgment that will come back to plague us. We're doing this to get a peace, we're not doing this to win an election. We're doing this for the future; we're not doing this for November 7th.
