TELCON - 3 - Marvin Kalb/Mr. Kissinger 11:34 a.m., November 13, 1972 HK: I haven't seen it yet. But I don't want to go into -- I just can't talk about the actual negotiations. MK: Yeah. Well, the trouble right now is that everybody -- not you -- I mean, everybody in my group is talking like hell and you don't even know whether they're talking sense. HK: You mean journalists? MK: Yeah. (laughter) HK: I tell you 98% are not talking sense. MK: Yeah. You know, you read this stuff and you just don't know -- HK: I know. It must be terribly maddening but there just isn't enough that's valid. MK: Do you still feel that the business of a single detailed substantive session could do it? HK: Well, it could break the back of it and then there will have to be consultations afterwards. MK: Um-humm. With the South Vietnamese HK: Right. And maybe some exchanges with the North Vietnamese. MK: Um-humm. Direct face to face or could that be done -- HK: That might be done by messages. MK: Yeah. And do you have a sense of the possibility of the ceasefire a.round this month? HK: I just don't want to put a time limit on it. MK: Right, right. HK: But I have no reason yet to change my original judgment that it can be done in a matter of weeks after negotiations resume. MK: Right. Well, I sure wish you luck. Thank you, Henry, very much. HK: But after this is over, I'11 pick some country that caves after a week.
