TelCon The President/Mr. Kissinger 4:55, December 19, 1972 K: Mr. President. P: Hi Henry. Anything further before I go to my reception. K: No, the final wave is going in in about 25 minutes. P: About 5 08 clock. K: Hanoi Radio is still off the air. P: Good. K: I just talked to Bill Sullivan and he says-- P: Incidentally, I spoke with him a little on Manilla. K: Yes, he told me. Well he said he's proud of the decision you took. He said he didn't think we'd have the guts to do it. P: But he did say he's proud of it? K: Oh, yes. P: Well it was just as well. The reason I want it brought to light, I didn't want him to feel he got it from any place else. K: And he said he's going to start backgrounding the press so that we get State Department support. P: Good. He ought to background them on the fact there's no damn split here either. Did you tell him that. K: That's right. P: And that basically the idea that I broke--one - of the them said the President broke Kissinger's word or something like that. That's the most ridiculous thing we ever heard of. There was no word given. K: a) there was no word given, Mr. President, and I have-- P: And the point was, as a matter of fact on the other hand, the point is that Sullivan ought to make is that after all we were not the one that said basically peace is at hand. The God damned North Vietnamese put out the peace thing. The North just has to sign it.
