K: I just had a cable from Haig saying that Weyand was asking for more
authority for B-52's.
M: I had a long conversation with him (Weyand) after you called me. I
just checked for bomb availability. We have plenty of bombs so we can
do it.
K: Areas such as Cambodia
M: We have some B-52's going in there today.
K: For which you have half-way reasonable targets.
M: Right. We don't want to flatten a village. I understand what you want
and we are doing our best.
K: I would also make a maximum tac air effort over the next week.
M: We are trying to help out Godley all we can. An increase over Ho Chi
Minh Trail. Our sorties yesterday were over 800 targets.
K: Do you think we can shut up our military briefing officers out there?
M: I don't know who they are. I talked to Weyand last night. They are
not going to say anything in the briefings. This comes from discussions
in bars. The press have their good contacts. We are doing everything we
can to shut them up.
K: Will you get in touch with me directly if there is any hold up along the
line ?
M: I am handling it by telephone. There should not be any hold up.
Henry, Anytime we could get to see the protocol -- and balance it against
my checkoff list.
K: I will let you read it tomorrow. We have General Woodward in Paris
who has been looking at it.
M: Yes, but we would like to check it against our list.
