The President/Mr. Kissinger
7:05 p.m., January 16, 1973
P:
Well, Burke Trend didn't feel that way
K:
Oh, no; Burke Trend is enthusiastic.
P:
How? In what way?
K:
Well, he thinks that Europe will be thankful to you someday for what
you did. I told him that you -- that what the Europeans had done had
done more to undermine the NATO alliance --
P:
Good.
K:
Than any other event he's --
P:
Except for Heath.
K:
Except for Heath. I said, here is a man who -- why did he do it?
Not for himself. Not even primarily for the United States but --
P:
Not even for a miserable Vietnam but because Europe, the Mid-East;
let's face it.
K:
Exactly.
P:
Did you tell him that?
K:
Absolutely.
P:
The stakes are a lot higher than that,
K:
And I said, what did the Europeans do? Sent unilateral notes, not
give him the benefit of any support. And I said the President feels very
bitter.
P:
Good. Did you? What did he say?
K:
And I think you ought to tell that to Heath.
P:
Oh, I will.
K:
He said he understands it. He said that was their reason why they
didn't do anything. They were under enormous pressure but they
refused to accede to it and that's true.
