P:
(cont'd) You know, he can throw up a lot of red herrings or he can throw
up some things which make it impossible for him to cave.
K:
My judgment is -- Haig's view was that he was giving us stuff in a low key
way so that he could cover himself with his opposition.
P:
I just can't imagine there's much Hawk opposition in Vietnam.
K:
Oh, yeah.
P:
Is there?
K:
Yeah.
P:
We know that?
K:
Their Hawks are as irresponsible as our liberals.
P:
And what do they want him to do?
K:
Win. Particularly after over.
P:
Yeah. Well, they're pushing him to go in and continue fighting, is that it?
K:
That's right. Or at any rate, accuse him of having sold out.
P:
Yeah. Who leads the Hawks?
K:
Well, some military and I guess mostly military
some militant
Catholics.
P:
Catholics you say?
K:
Yeah.
P:
Why in the hell doesn't somebody get after them? Somebody -- some of
our people, they work on them. What the hell's Bunker doing out there?
Anything?
K:
Well --
P:
Does he talk to such people?
K:
Well, Bunker has so concentrated on dealing with the Palace that he's not
really been effective with these groups.
P:
I see.
