P:
Yeah. Winston will tell you when things were happening yesterday, I
took particular pains tokeep him informed.
K:
Well, you've been a friend, I have no complaints -
P:
I know that, but I did feel that the arrangements were certainly lacking
in that respect--
K:
You have the Executive Assistant of the Secretary, Bremmer, sit in
the first row and have my guys in the second and third rows in morning
ceremony, it's just an outrage. Are you going to convey this in that
language to--
P:
I'm certainly going to convey it, and - -
K:
But I don't want you to pull your punches.
P:
I will make clear that this is certainly not the way to handle it. The
arrangements were so set and concrete when I got there, and saw them,
which was xixxx just before I got to the conference--
K:
Well, Bill, you know to what lengths I've gone to feature the State
Dept people, you look at the initialing ceremony, the two guys at my
left and right are State Dept people. You look at the meeting photos
the guys at my left and right are Aldridge and Sullivan, and my xxxx guys
xxx are pushed to the end of the table even though they went through all
the agony and nine-tenths of the work.
P:
Right, well I will--
K:
So if they had put one of my fellows at the table, it would have been a
gracious act.
P:
Well, I'll tell you, I must confess when I was here and you asked about
them getting on the plane and I went after that sour topic, I overlooked
the fact, it slipped my mind and I'm probably responsible, I should have
thought about where they were going to sit then. Everybody who came
with us was going to be in the room, but I just did not think at that time
about where Winston would be - -
K:
After all, I could have come along and upstaged the Secretary completely.
That would have kept Le Duc Tho there and he would never have been on
camera.
P:
Exactly, agree with you, Iagree, but I'm partly responsible, because
when the question of their going was brought up and was working--
K:
Don't let the Secretary off the hook, xxx you tell himk
