Ron Ziegler/Mr. Kissinger
3:58 p.m., January 29, 1973
Z:
Yeah, Henry.
R
K:
on, Mrs. Johnson is issuing a statement, which I'm getting down
to you. What time are you leaving down there?
Z:
7 o'clock.
K:
That gets you up here when? At 9:00?
Z:
9:30.
K:
Good.
Because, you know, my life isn't complete unless I know you are
in the same time zone.
Z;
Right.
K:
Well, then I'll get it down to Key Biscayne. I won't get it on the plane.
Z:
Okay.
K:
What it says, in effect, is
"One thing should be said about his last days. So many have
expressed sorrow since last Monday that my husband had no knowledge
of the ceasefire agreement in Southeast Asia. I think his friends should
know that fate was kind. Lyndon did know that peace had come. Through
the constant consideration and thoughtfulness of President Nixon
and Dr. Kissinger, my husband was kept continuously informed at every
stage of the long negotiations. He followed those proceedings very
closely and he was SO pleased when President Nixon himself called
him to report the final breakthrough." And SO on and SO forth.
Now I seem to remember that the President in his speech said he
talked to him last on Christmas Day.
Z:
No, January 2nd.
K:
Oh, is that what he said?
Z:
Yeah.
K:
Okay. Well, fine. Well, even that is before we reported the brek throug
Well, you can just say that after the President talked, the NSC office
called his staff and let him know. Which happens to be almost true.
