Milton Viorst/Mr. Kissinger

5:42 p. m., March 1, 1973
V:
Okay. That's of course
K:
I never take fees for lectures or --
V:
Okay. Because I raised this because it is most legitimate. You know, most
everybody
K:
No, no; if I give it, I would give it because it might make some contribution
to understanding what we're trying to do. And for that I don't want to get
paid.
V:
Let me suggest, Henry, that you might give it to your favorite charity.
K:
Well, that I might do.
V:
But would you please give it serious thought ?
K:
I shall.
V:
You know, let me just point out that there are several interviews. There
are several advantages which go above and beyond your unhappy experience
with Miss Fallaci.
K:
Well, whatever happened there, I've never taken her on but that could not
have been correct.
V:
Yeah, well, no, I know that. Number one, this is a joint excursion. In
other words, it's not me trying to stick you.
K:
Oh, I know that. That I would not --
V:
I'm not just talking about my own personal -- I'm talking about the way
they run these as an institutional thing in terms of our personal relationship.
We will cover areas which you will find useful to cover and we will not
necessarily talk about your sex life or any of the other things that the
world may be interested in.
K:
Right.
V:
Number two, the interviewee, and I may even disapprove of this as a matter
of fact, but it is their policy and I'm obligated to follow it, has the final
word on everything that goes in. In other words, just because you say it
and it's on tape doesn't mean you don't have a chance to revise it. So the
final revision stands in your hands.
