5 telephoned me and I have asked him to present this personal letter to you. On the ta el ephone he suggested the fault might lie with the staff of the person with whom I had an appoint- ment. He said perhaps they failed to notify the White House police I was coming. Whether the overworked secretary of one of your staff forgot to call the White House police is a matter of total indifference to me. When someone enough known to be called by name by the intercepting police officer which also happened without xxx any self-identification by me, it's quite enough to explain that that person has an appointment. Whatever your other rules may be, and how bad I may consider them, I'm afraid I connot forget this is the fact. For if Ron is correct in asserting that I am authorized to enter the White House as an normal American gentleman, as long as I have an appointment then I have been called a liar at least by implécation, my rejection of this - by the rejection of my explanation that this is the state of affairs lyesterday afternoon. K: I don't know whether that last paragraph, Joe, will be compre- hensible to tell you the truth. A: No. K: No, quite honestly, I think that up to that point you have an overwhelming case. A: Well, I'11 just leave it off. I was in doubt about it, I think I will. K: I leave that last paragraph off, and the President will be highly displeased with what happened. A: Okay, thank you Sir. See you tomorrow. R: Right.
