K:
Oh, yeah.
S:
Don and I are old friends from East Hampton.
K:
Yeah, he's very bright.
S:
Oh, boy, I almost had him down here. Did he tell you that story.
K:
We had him in OMB.
S:
That's correct. He would have been just super in that job.
K:
But I think he wants more disability. (?)
S:
Well, he would have taken the Deputy Director, but Fred Malek
decided that he wanted it,
notch
K:
Deputy Director, yes, but then they offered him one a/dak further
down--
S:
Yes, but they advised him at the same time not to take it, and to
wait for a couple of years and when the Administration does its
next shift that he would be on top of the pile, SO I hope he comes
then. He'd make a great contribution to the country.
K:
Yeah. He's always wanted me to join his firm for which I'm
spectacularly unsuited.
S:
I don't know that I agree with that. As a matter of fact, I disagre e
with it, having come from that industry. You read the specs incorrectly.
You'd be spectacular in that business. Investment banking, that's
what that business is. People with minds like yours.
K:
That's a new vista in my life that hadn't occurred to me.
S:
It's a marvelous business. That's where Pete's going, you know.
And I've been spending many hours with him.
K:
Oh really. Where is Pete going?
S:
Well, I haven't talked to him, he's home now, and--
K:
Oh, is he back?
S:
Yes, he got back. He was in the office today. I've been talking
to him as well as my former partner, Billy Sullivan, and Johnny
Goodfriend, and he's been talking to Lehman and Soloman. Billy
called me the other day and told me the offer he had
given to Pete, and I would be surprised if Pete didn't take it.
