Jerry Schecter/Mr. Kissinger
K:
Hello
S:
Hi, nothing in this world can happen without involving you.
K:
That's right. I admit this is true, but when did you find thisout.
S:
Well, it's taken me a while but it always seems to come back here
particularly on Friday afternnon, and Saturday when you want to
go on vacation. We're doing a cover on Whitlamb next week.
K:
Oh, Jesus, now what have I done.
S:
And Sous berger (spP) had a column on Wednesday saying that
Whitland sent a letter ofprotest about bombing last December to
President Nixon. Mr. Nixon had Henry Kissinger tell the
Australian Embassy the President disdained to answer theletter.
With some ugly and hostile remarks to Australian Cabinet members.
Our people in New York wanted to know whether that is right or not.
That was last December.
K:
Oh yeah, I--were there nasty remarks.
S:
That's not the Cabinet. It doesn't say anything about what these
things were but-=
K:
It's total nonsense to say that we disdain to answer the letter.
S:
Yeah. But the letter warn't answered.
K:
Well, because there wasn't much point in it. You know, there were
official communications. Our Ambassado r gave a reply, there
wasn't a written reply. We had our Ambassador give a reply.
S:
But you also talked to them here in Washington?
K:
Well, because we were leaving town that day, and what happened
was that their Ambassador was on the way back and sent theletter
over.
S:
i see, so you just--
K:
Well, when you don't answer a letter you don't have to say you're
not going to answer the letter. Wouldn't you think.
