President/Mr. Kissinga er
9:30 pm, March 29, 1973
K:
Mr. President
P:
Hwllo, Henry, how are you.
K:
I thought it went extremely well. Very well delivered and I
thingk it serves its purpose extremely well. As far as the
domestic opinion is concerned the story will be on themat
prices.
P:
Oh, yes, that'11 ;override everything else.
K:
We certai nly don't want to debate on Vietnam right now.
P:
No, but the point is I knew that would override, but it's well
to remind the people about Vietnam and about--
K:
Oh, no, I think it's very good, because if you had only Vietnam
it would have been--
P:
They say that's old story.
K:
Well, and you would have had Fulbright and everybody-
P:
We stuck a lot to them here.
K:
And as far as our chief audiences are concerned on foreign policy
in Peking, Moscow and Hanoi this was a very strong speech. And
it will have it s effect.
P:
Well that's the main thing. I think it will have an effect on the
American people too, it stiffen their backs on the defense stuff
which I think we did, I mean it was very hard and--
K:
And also it for the first explained the reason for the impoundment.
I for one didn't know, for example, that we had increased some
of these social welfare expenditures.
P:
Doubled.
K:
By the amount that we had.
P:
That Truman thing, the buck stops here, I thought was pretty good.
