TELCON Dep. Sec. Clements/Kissinger 4:53 p.m. - 4/10/73 K: Hello, Bill. C: Hi Henry. K: Are you alone on the line? C: Yes sir. K: Bill, if I let you have Hill are you going to fight for him over there ? C: Damn right. K: Are you going to win? Because we can't have somebody turned down. Because I've come to your judgment that he's the right man for the job. C: Well, thank you Henry, I certainly feel that way. Now I told Eliot of our conversation yesterday that K: Well, don't do anything yet because I want to get it triggered through the President. C: Right. Now Eliot knows that he has made the policy (?) statement to me when I asked him that Hill was acceptable to him and he committed himself to me. He thinks that he would add great stature; he thinks that he would really bring some weight into that Department here in the DOD and he has stated this. K: Oh, he's got to get a free hand in picking his deputies. C: All right, now that's going to represent probably a little bit of a problem but I don't think it would be one that would be of a serious nature, I really don't. K: Because I think you'd get a strong man over there and I have no idea about his detailed views and we want as strong a man as we can find. C: Um-hmm. How was your discussion with him yesterday ? Was he inclined to have an interest? K: I think he's inclined to do what the President asks him to do. C: I see.
