TELCON Joe Califano/Mr. Kissinger 5:55 pm, May 2, 1973 K: Hello. C: Hi, Henry, how are you? K: Okay. You were pretty prophetic, weren't you? C: In what way? K: Remember when I ran into you in the street and you said you were going to get well on the Watergate case. And I said isn't that dead? And you explained to me that judges read newspapers. C: (laughter) Yeah. It's very sad though. K: Well, it's now getting to beyond -- I don't really want to talk about it until it's run its course. But it's really now reaching a point where one has to ask one's self what good is achieved? C: Yeah. Well, the problem is, I mean, the thing that's killing -- and it's going to keep it going for a year in my judgment -- is the monumental nature of the cover-up by whomever; by whomever. K: Yeah. C: And the other thing, I'll tell you, you know people don't think through the fallout. You know that the Democratic Left -- the crazies, if you will -- are going to think they were cheated and they're not going to realize -- this would be against human nature and their human nature, particularly to think that they would have lost anyway. K: No, it's a problem for you too. Because what seemed to be settled at the last election within the Democratic Party. C: Wide open again, Henry. K: Can open up again. C: It will, it will. I mean, if you just psychologically put yourself in the position of George McGovern as he wins in South Dakota and now he's been given what to run on in South Dakota -- I told you how corrupt it was back there. K: Yeah
