TELCON Tom Jarriel/Mr. Kissinger 3:20 p. m. , May 11, 1973 K: Hello, Tom, how are you? J : Fine, sir, how are you doing? K: Okay. J : Listen, a couple of newsmen here in Washington at the initiative of the Soviet Government were going to Moscow to do some preliminary background feature material on some of their officials. And everything was cleared for them -- they had visas and transportation and hotels all arranged and the Embassy turned around and cancelled the whole thing; said it's all off. K: When? J : Yesterday. And the news people tried to find out why and the only answer they could get from the Embassy was that it was too delicate to discuss. It, of course, raises the question of why they did and exactly howfar it may reach in terms of the summit meeting. K: Look, this is the first I hear of this. J: Okay. Well, it was Charles Bartlett and Nancy Dickerson who had made the arrangements. K: Oh, yeah. Well, I have never heard of this particular event. All I can tell you is that everything I went to Moscow for has been accomplished. This will be apparent very quickly. But reading into what I said at the airport You know, the J: Right. On e additional conversation here. K: The way it happened was I was walking along a group of newsmen and I just wanted to convey to them that I was going to report to the President first before we made any announcement. J: I see. K: There was no hitch. There was an extraordinary reception. I mean, I'm the first Westerner who's ever been in the Politburo hunting J: Right.
