Murray Marder/Mr. Kissinger 3 4:17 .m., May 11, 1973 K: (laughter) M: That nothing is ruled out at this point. Henry, if I can just for a minute here, one brief problem - I don't know if it's possible for you to clarify it. We apparently have a story coming out of the European end, which I haven't seen yet, it refers to the timing of the Brezhnev thing. I gather the point of it -- our story has not actually come in yet -- seems to be that the Russians want to hold off the timing of the -- K: Total nonsense, believe me. Just let me finish M: / Not to hold off the meeting but the report was to halt of the announcement of the timing of the meeting to avoid any complications that might arise in between to have the announcement come closer to the actual thing. K: Look, this will be proved wrong SO shortly that you really shouldn't go with it. I mean, go with it but it will make you look silly. M: Right. There is no relationship of the K: Look, all I wanted to do at the Moscow airport I was walking along was to avoid having to say flatly that there would be an announcement and give me a chance to get back and report to the President. M: This is what many of us thought was happening. That you obviously did not want to be announcing the meeting in Moscow. K: No, because it would have to be a joint announcement That is literally the only thing. And the Moscow correspondents have had nothing to write. After all, one thing I find interesting is that no one printed what is much more significant -- the announcement that Moscow in fact printed of my visit in which they said I saw Brezhnev, the talks were conducted in a friendly atmosphere and both sides commented about their construetiveness and comprehensiveness. Now these for Communists are very unusual words. M: Yes. K: And for your information, I put into the Communique Draft -- I said they were conducted in a friendly atmosphere and complete frankness and Gromyko took out the words "and complete frankness" because he said that's a code word for disagreement. M: (laughter) That's right, it is of course.
