TELCON Marvin Kalb/Kissinger 9:42 a. m. - 5/14/73 K: Hello. MR MK: Hi, Henry. K: Marvin, how are you? MK: Fine, thank you. K: I just talked to the Random House people who said they have already been in touch with you. MK: Within 20 minutes after I got home. K: Oh. MK: Some guy called from New York and he said did I understand and I said yes and he said please as soon as you feel free, give us a call and he said. K: Well, he checked - I just want you to know - they wanted to know whether I would be offended if they published something that was in part critical and I said "no" unless it were a hatchet job that the publisher should have known. MK: Well, that isn't the case. K: Which I knew was not the case here. MK: Yeh, I mean this is something. K: So I said they should take this entirely on its merits and there was no possible way it could offend me. And I told him I had cooperated with it because of my high regard for you. MK: That's wonderful. That's stupendous! K: So I think they're extremely interested. MK: Well, God bless you and thank you. K: Have you told Norton yet? MK: I am sitting here, Henry, my stomach is turning over and I was just thinking how to quite say it, but I think that this call from you has given me new heart and I'm just going to do it. K: OK. MK: God bless you. Thank you.
