L: Well he said he had a news conference about these tapes on Ellsberg and Halperin. And he said that you had had a meeting with Hoover, a conver- sation with Hoover about in 1969 and asked, because of your fear of NSC leaks, asked the FBI to take it out or take some action. K: That I? L: Yes. That you had had a meeting with Hoover back in 1969, and had asked him to check out suspicion you had that there might be some leaks. Out of that came the Hopper and Taft. He didn't say you suggested it at all but that it came out and you did get the summaries of those tapes. What I wanted to ask you, Henry, he said there were 12 other people involved and I wondered if you knew if they were other members of your staff or not. K: Well, first I want to see what he said. L: Yeah. K: And why don't you call me sback later. L All right. It willall be--he released a statement but the text of the statement just spoke about how they recovered the tapes in the files. But in answer to questions immediately, he said that you had met with Hoover in the spring of 1969 and the discussion of problems on foreign policy and the need for securing National Security information. K: Right. taps L: And out of this came the taxk of the Halperin phone. couldn't K: You have said that I requested specific taps, could he.
