TELCON Amb. Cromer/Mr. Kissinger 8:28 a. m., May 15, 1973 K: Hello. C: Henry, good morning to you. K: How are you? C: I'm all right. How are you? K: Okay. C: Look I think you're in quite trouble with the dollar. The Watergate thing has overfloated to that field. In terms of the pounds, the dollar has gone to 256, which is about a 5% drop. K: Yeah. C: Good as you probably heard, is a 107 dollars this morning. K: Yes. C: And I thought just as a family friend I ought to tell you about this because if this goes over into the stock market, the lack of confidence, then we may have one hell of a problem. K: Right. What can we do. C: Well I don't know. I'd be delighted to come and talk to you, but I don't know what we can do. I'ts not only a question of confidence in the management of affairs, this is bound to sort of go back on the old place. K: Well, not easy to handle in the present atmosphere. C: Would it dissolve the problem. I was gonna have a word with Arthur Byrnes, again for the moment, oh boy, facing--I've not talked to the Ambassador. K: Well, why don't you talk to Arthur Byrnes and and if there's anything you think I can get done from here, will you call me, as an old friend. C: Sure, but I hate being a harbinger of bad news but I though you ought to know. R: Right.
