K:
Hello.
JK:
Good morning, Henry.
K:
Joe, I want you to know that I consider this article today the most
skunky thing that I have seen anybody do. But there's no point in
debating it. But has it ever occurred to you that in the case of Halperin,
that I might have - I mean I don't want this written - but has it occurred
to you that I was the one who kept him in the government. Why would
I put a wiretap on somebody who had a security file, who was not
approved for clearance and whom I, personally in my own name, put
on the staff? Whom, if I wanted to do anything to, I just had to withdraw
my clearance from him.
JK:
Why didn't you?
K:
Why didn't
JK:
Um-hmm.
K:
Because I had no reason to and that's why I said what I said on Sunday.
JK: Henry, what I wrote was not easy. You might think it was skunky.
K:
Some things that may have been difficult may not necessarily make it right.
JK:
Well, Henry there's a long, long history behind this as you say. It's
not right to debate on the telephone. Are you now saying that you did
not participate in the decision to bug?
K:
I am saying that I received the summaries; that the decision to bugging -
to do the bugging was not mine. That is correct.
JK:
You did not participate?
K:
I did not participate in the decision but I was aware of it.
JK:
Well, I must say - perhaps I don't understand it yet but I think I want to
stand on that story.
K:
Well, that's your privilege. It was - in any event someday, I'm certain
full
before the /complexity of these things will be apparent but I will stand on
the fact that I - well never mind I don't need to testify myself to you.
