Prof. Galbraith/Mr. Kissinger
9:50 a. m. , May 25, 1973
G:
I think the general mood is to say: Well, after all, Kissinger got
something done in these last years.
the concept does not seem
to be operating strongly with regards everybody else in the White House.
K:
Well, you know, at some point I have to decide whether the conditions
for getting anything done still exist.
G:
Well, don't make the decision right away. You know, I think it would
It's far from clear to me why I should be calling to give you advice. You
seem to be able to handle things pretty well.
K:
No, Ken, you've been a good friend in many difficult periods which I'll
never forget.
G:
Good. Don't -- [ mean, keep the thing in perspective and relax about it.
K:
I appreciate your calling very much.
G:
I called you before you left for Paris.
K:
Oh, did you, I didn't get the message.
G:
I called and discovered you had left SO I didn't leave word. I had a talk
with Henry Rosovsky -- he occupies the office next to me -- the day
after he became Dean. He1s a good guy, as you know.
K:
Yes, he's a fine man.
G:
He told me an interesting thing. He told me that one of his major
objectives was going to be to get Kissinger back to Harvard SO that you
might put that in the back of your mind. I think he told me he was in
the process of talking to you about the Soviet Jewish problem. He intended
to tell you that. Whether he has or not, I don't know.
K:
Well, he talked to me about the Soviet-Jewish problem and he made a
very fleeting reference to the other because there wasn't a good -- you
know, it wasn't a good condition for discussing it.
G:
Well, I thought I would pass along the word. You know, my own experience
coming out of Washington is that probably Harvard with all the jealousy
that operates against anybody who operates outside the University as you
have and as Arthur has and as I have still is about the best place to
decompress.
K:
Well, I'11 certainly very much keep that in mind. You know, events may
just force me to have to consider this but I won't admit to anything rash.
