TELCON
Senator Javits/Mr. Kissinger
11:00 a. m. June 2, 1973
2
J:
(cont'd) have not been able as yet to get a firm commitment from any
Democrat for this reason, that there doesn't seem to be a news tag
upon which to hang it. In other words, if you, for example, came up and
had a talk with the Committee, which I thought was going to happen, or
there was some other news tag -- a special anti-news tag which might
shake a public confidence in the fact that you fully intend to continue on
the job. I gather you've already said that publicly.
K:
Yeah.
J:
Then I could have something to hang it on to attract Democratic support.
Other than that, I had it up with the following Senators I'd like you to
remember their names -- Case, Mathias, Schweiker, Stevens, Taft,
Saxbe, and Percy. And I can get Stafford and Brooke. The theory was
that they preferred to --
K:
Couldn't you get Scott?
J:
I haven't talked to Scott yet in that detail. I'm sure I can get Scott and
I'm sure I can get Griffin. But they are going to phone you. At least that's
what they assured me, that they would phone you personally and assure
you of their support, etc. The thing that I would like to post you on
because you've just gotten back and these phone calls may not have come
in or they may be messages, etc. is that if in some way it could be
intimated to them for your purposes a phone call telling you they support
you is not enough, that it would be very desirable if some consolidated
approach to this matter could be publicly taken. I'm confident that if
I
can
get the support of not less than ten Republican Senators, I can get a few
Democrats -- Humphrey, [Chiles ? ], Stennis
K:
Certainly Stennis, he's just written me a letter.
J:
Yeah. Well, you know, we put this up to Stennis and his suggestion was
that we leave out any of the details about the situation
K:
No, he's just written me a very warm letter which, you know, spontaneous
J:
Yeah. Everybody is very willing to do that privately but what I've been
asking for is some public statement. Are you likely to come up for the
Committee?
up
K:
Well, I put it/to Fulbright and he's never followed up.
J:
He hasn't. Um-humm. Well, he's got a meeting going on Monday - 00 of the
Executive meeting to the Committee on Monday morning.
