June 2, 1973\n2\nJ:\n(cont'd) have not been able as yet to get a firm commitment from any\nDemocrat for this reason, that there doesn't seem to be a news tag\nupon which to hang it. In other words, if you, for example, came up and\nhad a talk with the Committee, which I thought was going to happen, or\nthere was some other news tag -- a special anti-news tag which might\nshake a public confidence in the fact that you fully intend to continue on\nthe job. I gather you've already said that publicly.\nK:\nYeah.\nJ:\nThen I could have something to hang it on to attract Democratic support.\nOther than that, I had it up with the following Senators I'd like you to\nremember their names -- Case, Mathias, Schweiker, Stevens, Taft,\nSaxbe, and Percy. And I can get Stafford and Brooke. The theory was\nthat they preferred to --\nK:\nCouldn't you get Scott?\nJ:\nI haven't talked to Scott yet in that detail. I'm sure I can get Scott and\nI'm sure I can get Griffin. But they are going to phone you. At least that's\nwhat they assured me, that they would phone you personally and assure\nyou of their support, etc. The thing that I would like to post you on\nbecause you've just gotten back and these phone calls may not have come\nin or they may be messages, etc. is that if in some way it could be\nintimated to them for your purposes a phone call telling you they support\nyou is not enough, that it would be very desirable if some consolidated\napproach to this matter could be publicly taken. I'm confident that if\nI\ncan\nget the support of not less than ten Republican Senators, I can get a few\nDemocrats -- Humphrey, [Chiles ? ], Stennis\nK:\nCertainly Stennis, he's just written me a letter.\nJ:\nYeah. Well, you know, we put this up to Stennis and his suggestion was\nthat we leave out any of the details about the situation\nK:\nNo, he's just written me a very warm letter which, you know, spontaneous\nJ:\nYeah. Everybody is very willing to do that privately but what I've been\nasking for is some public statement. Are you likely to come up for the\nCommittee?\nup\nK:\nWell, I put it/to Fulbright and he's never followed up.\nJ:\nHe hasn't. Um-humm. Well, he's got a meeting going on Monday - 00 of the\nExecutive meeting to the Committee on Monday morning."
