-300 K: There has got to be a salvation. E: We are committing suicide. A1 said this morning, if only you guys could see what is going on. You have made your point. The press cannot stop it. K: Maybe nobody can stop it. I understand. But five years from now when everybody is going to say what insanity was this in '73? What made us head like lemmings over the precipice? E: To put a very trite phrase on it, it is that the chickens are coming home to roost and there is no way to stop them, When John Ehrlichman gets up and defends a break-in in a doctor's office as clearly within the President's power as Commander-in Chief, and when that man was running the White House for four years, you can see what the chickens are. K: You have never heard me question the immorality of that episode. How are we going to keep these people who have done so much damage in the past from destroying out future? They would have a posthumous victory that exceeds any damage they did when they were in here. You know what I feel about the break-in and these associated activities. There is no excuse for them. E: I hear Tanaka may not come. [Asks about possible adverse affect in foreign area. ] K: Tanaka will come. If you ask me on the record I will say no. If you ask me It's like on the tennis court, if your shots are off one inch, how can you draw the analysis. You start pressing and everything comes harder. If this were the President who solved the Vietnam war in an honorable way and we asked for the Year of Europe they would not have refused us anything. But an extra dimension is missing. E: Does the President understand that? K: What can he do about it? E: Nothing. K: You know as well as I do, Rowland, that the difference in any effort you have ever known as between greatness and mediocrity is a nuance. You can't describe it. And it took us two years when no one understood what we were doing to get it. One success created the necessity of the other. When it unravels it will go the same way. For two years you won't see anything, and then you start pulling the threads out. I can go to the Hill and say, gentlemen, here are
