TELCON President Nixon/Kissinger 11:33 P.M. - July 31, 1973 P: Hello K: Hello Mr. President. P: Hi Henry How are you? K: OK. I just wanted to tell you that, how moving I thought your toast was tonight. P: Oh, well thank you Henry. I was deliberately in a very subtle way sticking it to some of yours and mine friends. K: I got that point. P: But they had to hear it. K: It was done in a very moving fashion Mr. President and so I P: Well thank you. The main thing is it ought to be said. K: I think. P: Isn't it about time somebody says you know I looked at old and Dominic all of them were sniffleing around and asking about their little projects and what do they want to be remembered for. They want to be remembered by this, of course they're not in Watergate, but want to be remembered by some God damn project they didn't get through. Wheter they won an election, they're going to be remembered whether the hell they moved the world a few inches toward more peace. God damn it that's what we are doing and I think that needled the hell out of the audience. I could see. K: OH, you could have heard a pin drop. It didn't really needle them but it moved them. There were few to whom the shoe fit. P: Do you think it got through to them.? K: Oh yes. I found that it was very moving and very beautiful. P: Did some of them talk to you about it ? Did they get the point of it?
