H:
That's a matter of interest to Case for some reason.
K:
No, William Beecher, William Beecher.
H:
Oh, it's Beecher?
K:
Yeah. But you see what he has to understand is that -- at least our
official position is -- well, first of all, for your information, Bryce,
there were 4 reporters bugged, right?
H:
Right.
K:
One was put on by the President personally for reasons I don't
understand. The other was put on by J. Edgar Hoover personally.
So that leaves two, William Beecher and Hedrick Smith. They put
themselves on by what they wrote. You see they didn't have to be
requested.
H:
Those two one that is the Times reporter, at least, apparently
is of interest to Case.
K:
Yeah, but can one not take the position, which in the case of the Times
reporter is correct, that any reporter that may have been on there
was put on automatically through the stuff he printed. and not through
any request. You see what I mean?
H:
And the other part is the degree of your involvement in all this.
And apparently Case is unsatisfied on that score and that may be
cleared up absolutely this afternoon, you see. Of course, Elliot
and Ruck handle it, right?
K:
Well, what does degree of my involvement mean? Take the maximum
degree of involvement, supposing I furnished every name on that list
that had access to national security information, which isn't true, but
supposing I had done it.
H:
Of course, I agree completely with your
K:
I mean, there are those three names that had no access whatever
and the four newsmen, which I've explained. So then that leaves 10
names that had access to national security information. I'm telling
you, Bryce Harlow, that some of those got on there because of their
security file information and some of them got on there apparently
because the President ordered them but they in fact did have access to
security information.
