K:
Hello.
TK:
Mr. Secretary.
K:
I'm hanging slowly in the wind. I watched Mike Mansfield this morning.
I'm glad to say he didn't mention me, I couldn't have stood it.
TK: (Laughs) I talked to him over the weekend and I said "What happened
to you on Friday? ?" He said, "The senate said first they were going to
be in session at 10 o'clock and he promised me he'd be there today.
He loves you and he will say nice things about you and there's absolutely
no problem.
K:
But Harlow said he says he loves me as much as I love myself and
that's impossible.
TK:
That is impossible. But he'll be there with red carnations so you can
recognize him.
K:
OK, Tom, that isn't what I'm calling about. Richardson and Ruckelshaus
are going with the Executive Committee at 9:30. Is there any way I can
find out what these two brethern are saying?
called
Richardson and told him to remember I want confirmation, not an
indictment. That that's a Senate Committee, not a grand jury.
TK: You and I and Lehman will probably wander in there about 10:20.
We'll
be out in the hall there about 10:20, 10:30.
K:
Oh, in the Caucus Room?
TK: In the Caucus Room. See there hearing is off in another room and I'll
lurk around, John and I'll lurk around and
K:
Good. I told Ruckelshaus I would have somebody there if he emerges
to find out from him what is going on.
TK: That's right and then we'll report it to you so you'll be prepared.
K:
Now you're going to lurk Tom, dear boy, fond as I am of you, I somehow
don't associate lurking with you.
TK:
We'll have our spies find out what happened in the 9:30 meeting and report
to you so you can be prepared.
