N: (con't) had that talk and that you did tell me that you were going to
instruct your staff to cooperate with me. Subsequently some of them
did. But I think it would be much worse for me to start rehearsing
that background to the press.
K:
Well, you know between cooperating and giving analytical explanations
and between cooperating and leaking documents is an enormous difference.
N:
Nobody leaked any documents to me anywhere. Now certain parts of
some documents were explained to me or described to me, or in some
cases a few sentences even read to me, but I never saw anything.
K:
Um-hmm. Well, I was not aware of the extent of that collaboration.
N:
I think it appears self-evident to any newspaperman reading this that
some of this stuff had to come from some part of
K:
I generally thought you got most of it from ACDA.
N:

Yeh, I know what you mean.
K:
I don't know whether my staff even knew about that - maybe they did.
N:
I think the best thing for all concerned really is simply for me to -
now if you think there's some language that could be worked into it which
could make it even clearer by not commenting on it I was neither con-
firming or denying it.
K:
I think, for example, you ought to make clear that no documents were
ever given to you.
N:
Sure.
what you did and didn't do, you sort of get drawn
into having to then address yourself to other questions. And I wanted
to leave it very general.
K:
What you tell me is news to me so there's actually not much I can do
about it. Saying generally will be helpful and going into the details
of negotiations there's an enormous gap.
N:
I quite agree. I had no way of knowing when we finished that conversation
where I would be going with this and as it went along I found myself
being told things I didn't really want to know. In fact I told a couple of
people in various partsof the government at various times that they were
telling me things I shouldn't know and didn't want to know and I had to do
