TELCON Strom Thurmond September 21, 1973/10:09 p.m. K: Hello. T: Dr. Strom Thurmond. K: How are you. T: It won't be long now and you'll be confirmed overwhelmingly. K: Aren't you nice. T: I just want to congratulate you and wish you the best of luck. K: Well, Senator, you know, we have to make alot of noises here but we know where our real friends are. T: That's right. Now we're doing all we can on this Kennedy Bill to, we're going to do all we can to uphold that. K: Well, that's absolutely essential. T: Yes sir. Let me ask you this. There's a man from my state who is acting Chief of Protocol, Marion Smoot, and he's done a good job. I've talked to alot of people, they all tell me he's done a fine job and I just wondered, would there be some chance to make him your Chief over there. K: I haven't had a chance really to look at this situation. You know I've never had anything to do with protocol in my present job but I will look at that very soon after I'm sworn in. T: I'd appreciate it if you would. Now, I'd hope you'd make him the Chief in the event you find he cannot them if you could just keep him on as Acting until next April, he'll have 5 years in and that would be a help to him. K: Well, that I'll be able to do I'm sure. T: Ok, and if you'll let me know when you've made a decision, I'd appreciate it. And good luck to you in every way. K: Thank you and I'll be in touch.
