TELCON
Gen. Haig - Secretary Kissinger
October 30, 1973
3:20 p. m.
H: I am going to Camp David right now.
K: Good luck and have fun. (Let me go into another room and talk
to you there. ) Hello.
H: He's in a rush up there and he doesn't want to have dinner with
Dobrynin. I guess he told you that.
K: Yes, I don't know why, but I understand.
H: He's bringing me up there for cover. You know Cox had a little
problem today.
K: Oh?
H: He admitted before the Senate Judiciary Committee he had
leaked to Ted Kennedy and Senator Hart the ITT thing, in agregious
abrogation of his charter. did it in the excitement of the post-firing
period. Hugh Scott really skewered him. Irvin and Baker verified
publicly that the proposal was very just and fair
after the Washington
Post had really made an attack on my honesty. I told Eliot either he
call the Washington Post and set them straight or I am going to unleash
the facts, with corroboration of four others
terrible thing. I've
been more than fair with him. You know I have. He was going to call
the Washington Post. I am going to call him when I get to Camp:David
If he hasn't, I am going to call the Post myself.
K: I haven't read the editorial.
H: It all came out of
SANITIZED John Moore. Where do we stand.
Everything all right?
K: Well, it's tough going with the Egyptians. They're real rug merchants.
But tell him he's got to hang tough with Dobrynin, not pull away from what
he did last week, not talk about his good relations with Brezhnev.
He's got to put it back on the track. And, Dobrynin's going to unleash
like a wild man, say it was totally unprovoked
and that's crap.
And, we've read every communication we've ever had from them.
