TELECON
Gerald Warren/ Secretary Kissinger
November 24, 1973
3:35 pm
K: On that story. My worry is if I call him
well, first I never
said anything.
W: Let me tell you what I said. We have no evidence that Secretary
Kissinger's phone has ever been tapped. They have a denial also from
your press office
but your associate stands by it.
K: Who is that?
W: Beats me. . but if you told him you never made such a statement.
K: I could have said. . now you know the plumbers weren't working for me.
or some other context. Saffire once called me up and said we now know
your phone was tapped
My worry is if I call him up
he can say .
I have the Secretary call be and said.
W: But the point is they said you know your phone is tapped and we have
no information it was tapped. That's where the strong language should
come in
you are quoted as saying that you were virtually certain your
phone was tapped in early 1969.
K: I have no way of knowing.
W: We have said there is no evidence your phone has ever been tapped.
The damaging one is whether they attributed to you that you know
K: There are various phones and it is that point, there could have been
a number of associates who were certain
today, noone is sure and I
don't think it was.
I just hate for the Secretary of State to call that
son of a bitch.
W: I hate to see this get out with no challenge.
K: I have had my press office deny it. What should I do ?
W: I think you should call the son of a bitch, excuse me. And tell him
you never said that.
K: I am not 100 per cent sure I never said it to someone, but it would
have to have been a goddamn close associate. that's my problem.
W: I suggest that you say there is no evidence
