K: Paul, How are you?
Z: Fine, but how are you?
K: Fine.
Z: I hope you have had some kind of rest -- my God, what a trip you have had.
K: I am getting back into the time zones.
Z: When are you going to get some rest.
K: I hope soon.
Z: You obviously are not going to go away on Friday as you expected.
K :
No I am not.
Z : Do you know when you will be going away.
K : In about two weeks.
Z: I cannot tell you how worried we are about -- I don't know
what you do, but thank God you do it. I talked to your office
when I realized you would not be back until Monday. I knew you
could not obviously meet with us this week. In the meantime,
I thought I would also tell you that Elmer Winter has been very
helpful in trying to get some movement on this Jackson Amendment.
As a matter of fact I had occasion to talk to Jackson myself
on something else and I needled him a little bit about being
frozen into a position. We are trying to accomplish something
and let's find out what and not sit back and make a bymbol out of
something that has no substance. He said he wanted to talk to you
about it more. In the meantime, on the 29th the American Jewish
Committee is having a meeting out in Scotsdale where I think it
is going to be one of the matters on the agenda. Moss will be
out there and Winter has promised to talk to him.
K : I will tell you it is now absolutely -- if we want moderation
on the Middle East policy by the Soviet Union we have to get the
Jackson Amendment amended. We cannot keep the Soviets quet in the
Middle East and humiliate them constantly.
