TELECON
The President/Secretary Kissinger
January 23, 1974, 7:00 p.m.
N: Hello.
K:
Mr. President.
N:
Hi, Henry.
K : Mr. President, I just wanted to let you know that I have
had a long cable from Saudi Arabia. I think there's still
another part coming. If you write a letter tomorrow that,
then, over the week-end we can work out SO that you can announce
it in your State of the Union address.
N: Letter to whom?
K:
To Faisal.
N: Good. Good. This is the greatest thing we could possibly
do. Apart from the damn embargo, it wouldn't amount to
anything anymore.
K: All you have to do is give him reassurance.
N: Why don't you prepare a letter and bring it over tomorrow.
I'll add a few scribbled notes.
K: We'll send it over tomorrow, Mr. President.
N: That's good news. How's your confidence? You're not
getting discouraged?
K: Not at all. I thought you were in very good form this
morning.
N: Well. I thought that our friend
Which meeting were
you at?
K :
I was at both.
N: I thought that Simon was a wipe-out.
K: A disaster.
N:
I felt I had to say a few things. Didn't you?
K: You saved him.
